Mexican President Believes Mexican-Jewish Community Plays ‘Vital Role in Country’s Development’

(By: Menachem Rephun) Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto confirmed his conviction that the Mexican-Jewish community plays a vital role in contributing to the country’s development.

On Monday evening, Nieto served as keynote speaker for a dinner at Centro Deportivo Israelita in Mexico City that was dedicated to celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Belfer Institute for Latino and Latin American Affairs of the American Jewish Committee.

“I am pleased to be here with members of the Jewish community in our country,” Nieto told his audience of 150 Jews, hailing from both North and South America. “They have been integrated into our society and a part of it. Its members give their best for the development of our nation.”

The president added that “the cause we share is development of Mexico. You have been part of this.”

When interviewed by a Jewish news agency, Nieto praised the Jewish community of the United States for their unwavering support of Hispanic immigrants. “The Jewish community is integrated, committed and is working in every place where it is,” Pena Neto told the Agencia Judía de Noticias.

With a population of more than 40,000 Jews, Mexico boasts the third largest Latin American Jewish community in the world, with just Argentina and Brazil ahead.
